Learn to Curl at the Alexandria Curling Club
The Adult Learn To Curl Program offered at the Alexandria Curling Club uses the curriculum that was developed by Curling Canada and the Ottawa Valley Curling Association and is designed to teach adults (21+) who have never curled before the wonderful sport of curling. Aimed at developing a sound sliding type delivery, the lessons build on skills learned through the repetition of drills. Each 2 hour class introduces a new skill and integrates it into the delivery of a curling stone. The first 8 lessons are followed by 2 classes of games where everyone gets a chance to play different positions.
The cost of the program is $150 and all necessary equipment is supplied. Participants will have an opportunity to purchase equipment if they prefer and they will be able to play occasionally or spare in the various leagues and bonspiels at the club as soon as they’ve developed their skills. At the conclusion of the program in December, participants can pay an additional $100 to become full-time members and curl in any of the club leagues or bonspiels till the end of the season in mid-April.
Those who are incapable of sliding for reasons of health or flexibility can easily learn to “throw a stone” using a stick. Although “stick curlers” are not necessarily discouraged from taking the course, the curriculum is definitely focused on a traditional sliding delivery so most of the classes and drills are aimed at developing this technique.
